The end of each year brings a deluge of lists: Best & Worst Movies, Best Books, Best CDs, etc... I used to have a ritual involving such lists: I would save lists compiled by my favorite critics, with the intention of buying the items recommended. I would place the lists somewhere that I KNEW I would remember. Months would pass. Then, one spring day, I would turn my house upside down, searching for lists of things that people I didn't know thought everyone should see, read, hear.
This year is different. I'm no longer interested in year-end lists of what's worth watching, reading, and listening to. I am my own favorite film, book, and music critic. I get recommendations from friends with similar tastes and broader reaches across the pop culture landscape.
The most important change in my life this year is that I find it immensely more satisfying to let go of things than to acquire them.
Happy New Year!
